Chapter 6 - THE HOTEL DOOR

Julian sounded calm.

That frightened Selene more than if he had shouted.

“Elena.”

Another knock.

“I know you're in there.”

Selene whispered, “Don't answer.”

I almost smiled.

For the first time, she and I agreed on something.

My phone vibrated.

Security was positioning officers outside the service stairwell.

Hotel management had been alerted.

Police were already being contacted.

Julian didn't know any of that.

Or maybe he did.

He kept talking.

“Selene stole company property.”

Selene's eyes widened.

I looked at her.

“Company property?”

She shook her head quickly.

“Richard's records were never corporate records.”

Julian continued through the door.

“If you leave with those documents, Elena, you become part of the theft.”

There it was.

The old tactic.

Make me afraid of consequences he invented.

Make compliance sound like safety.

I walked toward the door but did not open it.

“Is that what you came to tell me?”

Silence.

Then his voice changed.

“You need to come home.”

I almost couldn't believe it.

“Home?”

“We can fix this.”

Behind me, Selene stared as if even she thought he was insane.

“You ordered me beaten.”

“I was angry.”

“Two hundred times?”

Silence again.

Then he said, “Selene pushed me.”

Selene's mouth dropped open.

I turned toward her.

She whispered, “Unbelievable.”

I faced the door again.

“You told me there were no witnesses.”

“I was trying to scare you.”

“You succeeded.”

His voice softened.

“Elena.”

“I love you.”

For years, those words had ended arguments.

I love you.

As if love erased everything that came before it.

This time they sounded empty.

“You love owning me.”

“That isn't true.”

“You forged my name.”

Silence.

That was the first moment I knew Selene's documents were authentic.

Julian had not asked what I meant.

He knew.

I continued.

“Marlowe Strategic Holdings.”

Nothing.

“Forty-six million dollars.”

Still nothing.

“Were you planning to send me to prison when your scheme collapsed?”

His answer came quietly.

“You don't understand the structure.”

I closed my eyes.

Not denial.

Explanation.

That was Julian.

He could confess while pretending he was educating you.

Selene reached for the case.

I stopped her.

“Leave it.”

She looked confused.

“Why?”

“Because nobody touches anything until investigators arrive.”

Julian heard me.

“Elena, listen to me.”

“No.”

“You are making a mistake.”

“That sentence used to terrify me.”

I put my hand on the door.

“Not anymore.”

Then everything happened quickly.

A crash sounded from the hallway.

Someone shouted.

Selene stepped backward.

I heard security order someone to get on the floor.

Julian cursed.

Another voice shouted that he had no weapon.

I opened the door only after David's lead officer told me it was safe.

Julian was against the opposite wall.

One security officer stood several feet from him.

Another blocked the stairwell.

Julian looked at me.

His face twisted with humiliation.

“You brought guards?”

I looked at him.

“You taught me why I need them.”

Two police officers entered the corridor moments later.

Julian immediately became a different man.

His shoulders relaxed.

His voice steadied.

He spoke carefully.

He claimed he had come to retrieve stolen corporate material.

He claimed the previous night had been a “private marital dispute.”

He claimed my injuries resulted from “mutual escalation.”

I listened without interrupting.

Then one officer looked at me.

“Mrs. Vale, do you want him near you?”

“No.”

That one word changed the direction of the conversation.

Julian looked at me sharply.

I repeated it.

“No.”

The officer instructed Julian to step away.

His attorney arrived fifteen minutes later.

Mine arrived six minutes after that.

The black case was transferred under documented chain of custody.

Selene gave a statement.

Not because she suddenly developed a conscience.

Because her own attorney told her cooperation was safer.

By the time Julian left the hotel, reporters were waiting outside.

Someone had leaked the location.

His face appeared on financial television before noon.

VALE CEO QUESTIONED AMID CORPORATE CONTROL CRISIS.

Another headline followed.

BOARD INVESTIGATES UNDISCLOSED RELATED-PARTY TRANSACTIONS.

Then one that struck harder.

CEO'S WIFE SEEKS PROTECTIVE ORDER.

That afternoon, Julian's attorneys offered me a deal.

They would agree to a quiet divorce.

I would receive the house.

A cash settlement.

Confidentiality.

No public allegations from either side.

David slid the proposal toward me.

My father didn't speak.

He knew better now.

I read every page.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Exactly the way Julian had trained me not to.

Then I reached the final page.

I picked up a pen.

David watched me.

Dad watched me.

I drew a line across the signature block.

May you like

And beneath it I wrote two words.

NO DEAL.
