Chapter 3 - The Account Lily Never Knew About

David’s eyes moved toward me.

“What accounts?”

I almost admired the performance.

He sounded confused.

Concerned.

Innocent.

It was the same voice he used with investors when quarterly numbers were bad.

The same voice he used with me when I found lipstick on his collar six months earlier.

Adrian removed another document from the folder.

“The Lily Vance Family Preservation Trust.”

David went completely still.

Julianne frowned.

“What is that?”

David ignored her.

Adrian continued.

“The trust was established by Maya’s father eleven years ago.”

“It was funded with approximately twelve million dollars in securities and private equity interests.”

“The primary beneficiaries were Maya Vance and any biological children born to her.”

David forced a laugh.

“I know what the trust is.”

“Then you know you weren’t authorized to borrow against it.”

The laugh disappeared.

I watched Julianne turn toward him.

“Borrow?”

Adrian placed several transaction summaries onto the empty built-in bookshelf.

“Over the last thirty-one months, approximately eight point four million dollars was transferred, pledged, or leveraged without Mrs. Vance’s lawful authorization.”

Julianne stared at David.

He looked at me instead.

“Maya, I can explain that.”

I said nothing.

“The signatures were yours.”

David pointed toward me.

“You approved the restructuring.”

“No.”

“Yes, you did.”

“No, David.”

“You signed everything.”

“My attorney compared the documents.”

I paused.

“Some of the signatures were scanned from our home refinancing paperwork.”

His face tightened.

“Others were forged.”

Julianne slowly released his arm.

David noticed.

He turned on her.

“Don’t.”

She looked stunned.

“You told me you sold part of the company.”

“I did.”

Adrian answered for him.

“No.”

“He did not.”

“His company has been insolvent on paper for nearly fourteen months.”

Julianne’s eyes widened.

David lunged verbally.

“That is confidential business information.”

“It became evidence when you used protected trust assets to conceal the insolvency.”

My stomach turned even though I had already seen every document.

This part still felt unreal.

I had spent thirteen years believing David’s company, Vance Meridian Holdings, had made him rich.

In reality, my father’s trust had been keeping his empire alive.

My money.

Lily’s future.

Our home.

Even the yacht in the Bahamas had been partially paid through a corporate travel account linked to funds secured against the trust.

Adrian flipped to another page.

“Approximately two hundred and eighty thousand dollars was charged during your two-week trip.”

Julianne’s face changed.

“That can’t be right.”

David snapped at her.

“Stop talking.”

Adrian looked directly at her.

“Ms. Vale, I strongly recommend that you do not take legal advice from Mr. Vance.”

Her eyes hardened.

“What else did he use the money for?”

Adrian looked at me.

I nodded.

He turned another page.

A photograph was clipped to it.

A luxury condominium overlooking Lake Michigan.

Julianne stared at the picture.

David closed his eyes.

Adrian spoke calmly.

“The condominium purchased for Ms. Vale was funded through a shell company capitalized using collateral connected to Lily’s trust.”

Julianne looked at David as if he had struck her.

“You said that apartment was yours.”

David did not answer.

“You said you bought it for me.”

Still nothing.

May you like

My daughter had been fighting for her life in an ICU while the man who called himself her father was sleeping with another woman inside a home paid for with Lily’s stolen future.

And somehow, that still was not the worst thing the investigators had found.
