Chapter 11 - Charlotte Comes Back

Charlotte wanted immunity.
She did not use that word.
But that was what she wanted.
She contacted Gavin through an encrypted messaging account and demanded a meeting.
Rachel advised him not to respond privately.
By then, law enforcement had become involved because the forged loan documents and interstate transfers potentially crossed criminal lines.
Gavin agreed to cooperate.
The meeting took place in a hotel restaurant near the airport.
I was not there.
I heard the recording afterward.
Charlotte arrived wearing sunglasses and a gray coat despite the heat.
“You look awful.”
Those were her first words to Gavin.
He ignored them.
“Where’s the laptop?”
“Safe.”
“What do you want?”
“Twenty-five million.”
“You don’t have leverage worth twenty-five million.”
Charlotte laughed.
“I have enough to put Mason in prison.”
“And you?”
Silence.
Gavin continued.
“You think he did all of this without you?”
“I kept evidence.”
“That doesn’t answer my question.”
“He used me.”
There was something almost tragic in her voice.
Almost.
Then Gavin asked, “Did you lie about the car?”
Charlotte went silent.
“Answer me.”
“Yes.”
The word came softly.
Listening later, I felt no triumph.
Only confirmation.
Gavin’s next question came slower.
“Why?”
“Mason said Sabrina was becoming a problem.”
“What does that mean?”
“She knew Elaine.”
“That’s it?”
“She understood financial statements.”
Gavin did not speak.
Charlotte continued.
“Mason thought she would eventually tell Crestview to dig deeper.”
“So you accused her of damaging your car.”
“I needed you angry.”
“And you knew what I would do?”
“No.”
“Don’t lie.”
“I knew you’d make her leave.”
“You watched me hit her.”
Charlotte’s voice hardened.
“That was your decision.”
For once, she was right.
I hated hearing it.
Gavin could blame manipulation.
He could blame pressure.
He could blame Mason.
But Charlotte had not moved his arm.
She had not made him choose violence.
That part belonged to him.
Then came the revelation investigators had been waiting for.
“Mason wanted the divorce signed before Monday,” Charlotte said.
“Why?”
“Because Crestview’s money would trigger the recapitalization.”
“And?”
“And once it did, some of the hidden entities were supposed to be folded into the new structure.”
Gavin cursed.
Charlotte continued.
“If Sabrina still had marital claims, her lawyers might have demanded valuation documents.”
“So you needed her gone.”
“Mason needed her gone.”
“You helped.”
“Yes.”
Gavin’s voice became very quiet.
“What did Mason promise you?”
Charlotte laughed weakly.
“You.”
That answer silenced the room when investigators later replayed it.
Charlotte had believed Gavin would divorce me, marry her, and make her part of SwiftFreight’s future.
Mason had promised her millions.
Instead, he had placed almost every dangerous asset in her name.

She had not been his partner.
She had been his shield.
