Chapter 11 - What Michael Finally Confessed

I called Michael.

This time, I did not hide who I was.

“Come to the estate.”

He was silent.

“Why?”

“Because I found Richard’s recording.”

Another silence.

Then he whispered.

“Oh, God.”

“You have one hour.”

Michael arrived in forty-three minutes.

Richard, Eleanor, and I waited in the library.

Michael entered alone.

Ethan was downtown.

Chloe was supposedly at a charity luncheon.

Michael saw the documents on the table.

His face collapsed.

“You found everything.”

“Not everything.”

I said.

“You’re going to fill in the rest.”

Michael sat down.

For the first time in our relationship, he looked older than me.

“When Vitalis started Lazarus, I thought it was just aggressive data modeling.”

“What does that mean?”

I asked.

“It means I didn’t ask enough questions.”

“That seems to be a pattern with you.”

He accepted the blow.

“I was ambitious.”

Richard watched him coldly.

“You approached me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Valerie showed me raw patient data.”

Michael rubbed his face.

“The official reports were different.”

“How different?”

“Enough that I knew somebody was manipulating outcomes.”

“Who?”

“I didn’t know.”

“Did you know Ethan was being paid?”

“Not at first.”

Michael looked toward Richard.

“Then I saw a consulting invoice.”

“Why didn’t you go to authorities?”

Richard asked.

Michael gave a bitter laugh.

“Because I was earning almost four hundred thousand dollars a year and thought I could fix the problem quietly.”

I stared at him.

That answer sounded painfully familiar.

Michael always wanted consequences to disappear without requiring sacrifice.

“What happened after you warned Richard?”

I asked.

“My boss found out.”

“How?”

“I told him.”

I closed my eyes.

Michael looked ashamed.

“I thought he was going to stop the deal.”

“Instead Richard crashed.”

“Yes.”

“And you still stayed.”

“Yes.”

I wanted to hate him cleanly.

It would have been easier.

But the truth was uglier.

Michael had not planned the crash.

He had simply been cowardly enough to remain silent afterward.

“Did you know Ethan caused it?”

Richard asked.

Michael looked at him.

“I suspected.”

“Based on what?”

“Two days after the accident, Ethan called me.”

Richard leaned forward.

“What did he say?”

“He said the Vitalis contract could move forward now.”

The room went still.

Michael continued.

“I told him Richard was alive.”

“He said that didn’t matter.”

Eleanor made a broken sound.

Michael looked toward her.

“He said Richard would never control the company again.”

I felt sick.

“Why?”

Richard asked.

Michael stared at his hands.

“Because the new rehabilitation reports would prove you were permanently incapacitated.”

I finally understood.

The medication.

The weak therapy.

The falsified evaluations.

The entire recovery had been engineered to support a legal declaration that Richard could no longer manage his affairs.

“Ethan didn’t just want him dead.”

I whispered.

Michael looked at me.

“No.”

“He wanted him legally powerless.”

“Yes.”

Richard’s voice became dangerously calm.

“When?”

Michael frowned.

“When what?”

“When is Ethan planning to have me declared incompetent?”

Michael looked toward the grandfather clock.

“Tomorrow morning.”

My heart stopped.

“He scheduled an emergency board meeting.”

Richard smiled.

It was the coldest smile I had ever seen.

“Good.”

Eleanor stared at him.

“Good?”

Richard looked at me.

“For eight months, Ethan has believed I’m helpless.”

He placed both hands on the arms of his wheelchair.

Then, in front of Michael, he slowly pushed himself upright.

Michael jumped to his feet.

Richard stood.

Shaking.

Unsteady.

But standing.

May you like

His eyes locked on my former husband.

“Tomorrow, we let him keep believing it right up until the moment it destroys him.”
