Chapter 8 - WHY VANESSA MARRIED RYAN

Ryan had spent days questioning his marriage.

After Dean’s note, he began questioning whether the marriage had ever been real.

Investigators examined Vanessa’s life before she met him.

The timeline was disturbing.

Ryan founded Mercer Construction at twenty-seven.

At thirty, his company won a major renovation contract for a commercial property partially owned by the Bennett family trust.

Six months later, Ryan met Vanessa at a charity event.

He had always considered it chance.

It was not.

Emails recovered from Vanessa’s old laptop proved she researched him first.

His company.

His property.

His finances.

His employees.

Even his family.

Ryan stared at the records.

“She targeted me.”

Daniel sat beside him.

“It appears so.”

“Why?”

“Access.”

Mercer Construction gave Vanessa something valuable.

A legitimate company through which fraudulent invoices could move unnoticed.

Ryan’s reputation was clean.

His books were audited.

His clients trusted him.

Vanessa did not marry a wealthy man.

She married infrastructure.

Ryan felt humiliated in a way he could not describe.

Every anniversary.

Every photograph.

Every whispered I love you.

Had any of it been real?

Daniel closed the laptop.

“Stop.”

“What?”

“You’re torturing yourself with a question nobody can answer.”

“She had Emma with me.”

“Yes.”

“Was that planned too?”

“Emma is real.”

Ryan looked at him.

“That’s not what I asked.”

“No.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“But it’s the answer that matters.”

Emma was real.

Her hugs were real.

Her laughter was real.

Her decision to bring bread to a frightened boy was real.

Whatever Vanessa had intended, she had created something she could not corrupt.

A child with compassion.

Dean Walsh remained missing for four days.

Then he called Ryan directly.

Ryan was driving home from the grocery store when the unknown number appeared.

He answered through the car speaker.

“Hello?”

“Don’t hang up.”

Ryan recognized the voice.

“Dean.”

“I need money.”

Ryan nearly laughed.

“You need a lawyer.”

“I have information.”

“So do the police.”

“Not this.”

Ryan pulled into a parking lot.

“What do you want?”

“Fifty thousand.”

“You helped imprison a child.”

“I built a room.”

“You saw him.”

“I didn’t put him there.”

“You knew.”

Silence.

Ryan continued.

“You were at the lake house.”

Dean stopped breathing.

Ryan knew he had him.

“We have video.”

“That wasn’t supposed to survive.”

Ryan immediately began recording the call on another device.

“What did you see?”

Dean’s voice became quieter.

“Vanessa told me to come because she might need a cleanup.”

Ryan closed his eyes.

“She planned Leah’s death?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I swear.”

Dean said Vanessa believed Leah might expose the trust scheme.

She asked him to remain near the property.

If Leah signed the documents, nothing would happen.

If she refused, Vanessa wanted options.

“What options?”

“She never said.”

“Then Leah fell.”

“Yes.”

“You watched.”

“Yes.”

“And did nothing.”

Dean’s silence answered.

Ryan gripped the steering wheel.

“Why did Vanessa marry me?”

Dean laughed once.

Not from humor.

From disbelief.

“You really don’t know.”

“No.”

“Your company wasn’t the first reason.”

Ryan waited.

“Your father.”

Ryan froze.

“My father died when I was nineteen.”

“I know.”

“What does he have to do with this?”

“Ask Rachel about Thomas Bennett and Michael Mercer.”

The call ended.

Ryan immediately contacted Mendoza.

Police traced the phone to a disposable device.

Dean was gone again.

Ryan called Rachel.

She became silent when he mentioned his father.

“You knew him.”

Rachel whispered.

“Yes.”

Ryan stood in his townhouse kitchen.

“How?”

“Your father worked for ours.”

Ryan had known Michael Mercer was an accountant.

He had never known for whom.

Rachel explained.

Michael Mercer had spent eleven years as financial controller for Thomas Bennett’s company.

He discovered Thomas’s business partner diverting funds.

Michael reported it.

The investigation saved Bennett’s company millions.

Thomas trusted Michael completely.

Then Michael died in what police called a single-car accident.

Ryan sat down.

“He fell asleep.”

“That’s what they said.”

Rachel’s hesitation terrified him.

“What are you telling me?”

“I’m telling you Thomas never believed it.”

Ryan felt cold.

“Who did?”

“Diane.”

Ryan almost dropped the phone.

His mother-in-law had known his father.

Long before Ryan met Vanessa.

Rachel continued.

Diane worked in Thomas Bennett’s finance department during the same period.

Michael Mercer discovered irregularities tied not only to Thomas’s business partner but also to Diane.

Nothing was ever proven.

Michael died before he could testify.

Diane left the company months later.

Years passed.

Thomas died.

Then Vanessa began searching Ryan’s company records.

Ryan understood.

“She didn’t choose me randomly.”

“No.”

“She chose the son of the man her mother hated.”

Rachel’s voice softened.

“I think at first she chose you because Mercer Construction offered cover.”

“And later?”

“I don’t know.”

Ryan did.

Vanessa had enjoyed it.

The control.

Using Michael Mercer’s son to steal from the Bennett estate.

Building a criminal scheme inside the company Michael’s son had created.

It was revenge disguised as marriage.

Ryan felt physically sick.

That night, he checked on the children.

Emma was awake.

“You look sad.”

Ryan forced a smile.

“Just tired.”

She lifted her blanket.

“You can sit here.”

Ryan sat.

Emma leaned against him.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Did Mommy trick you?”

Ryan looked at her.

Children heard more than adults realized.

“Sometimes grown-ups lie.”

“You tell me lying is bad.”

“It is.”

“Then why did Mommy do it?”

“Because knowing something is wrong doesn’t always stop someone from doing it.”

Emma considered that.

Then she held his hand.

“I won’t trick you.”

Ryan kissed her hair.

“I know.”

From the other bed, Noah spoke.

“My mommy didn’t lie.”

Ryan turned.

“No.”

“She told me you were good.”

Ryan’s throat tightened.

“When did she say that?”

“At the playground.”

Ryan remembered Leah.

Brown coat.

Worried eyes.

Noah continued.

“She said if we ever got lost, I should find Emma’s daddy.”

Ryan stared at him.

Leah had been preparing Noah long before her death.

Maybe she knew danger was closer than anyone realized.

The next morning, Detective Mendoza called.

Dean Walsh had been found.

Alive.

He walked into a federal courthouse in Washington, D.C., with an attorney.

He wanted protection.

This time, he was prepared to testify.

His first statement lasted six hours.

The most shocking revelation came near the end.

Vanessa had not planned to keep Noah hidden forever.

She had chosen a date.

Emma’s fifth birthday.

Six weeks away.

Ryan’s blood went cold.

“What was supposed to happen then?”

Mendoza looked at him.

“Vanessa planned to make Noah disappear permanently.”

Ryan could not speak.

May you like

Mendoza continued.

“And based on Dean’s testimony, she planned to make it look like you did it.”
