Chapter 18 - The Room Beneath the Factory

The old packing plant had been abandoned for eighteen years.
The Caruso name still appeared above the loading dock in faded red letters.
Marco’s team entered first.
No lights.
No workers.
No Anthony.
The tracker signal came from below ground.
Dominic led us toward an old freight elevator.
It did not work.
We took stairs.
Basement.
Storage level.
Then a locked steel door.
Marco opened it.
Behind it was a corridor that did not appear on the building plans.
I looked at Dominic.
“Your family has a problem with hidden rooms.”
He almost smiled.
Then we found the portrait.
Maria Sofia Caruso leaned against a concrete wall.
Undamaged.
Waiting.
Beside it sat Daniel Crowe.
Hands bound.
Bruised but conscious.
Marco freed him.
“Anthony?”
Daniel pointed deeper into the corridor.
“He went down there.”
“Why?”
“There’s an archive.”
Dominic looked at him.
“What archive?”
Daniel laughed weakly.
“The real one.”
The second room was larger.
Metal shelves filled it.
Boxes.
Ledgers.
Photographs.
Audio tapes.
Documents spanning forty years.
Vittorio had never destroyed the family’s secrets.
He had stored them.
Insurance.
Leverage.
Protection.
Anthony had discovered the archive and used it to control everyone his father once controlled.
Then I saw something on the desk.
A yellow ribbon.
Dominic picked it up.
Attached was a note.
NOT EVERYTHING YOUR MOTHER HID WAS ABOUT CRIME.
He unfolded another sheet.
A map of the mansion.
One section had been circled.
The greenhouse.
Dominic stared at it.
“Why the greenhouse?”
Daniel spoke behind us.
“Anthony said something about Maria’s last box.”
“What box?”
“I don’t know.”
A sound echoed from the corridor.
Marco turned.
Anthony appeared at the far end.
He held a small metal case.
“You always were late to the important meetings, cousin.”
Dominic moved in front of me.
Anthony smiled.
“Relax.”
“I’m leaving.”
“Not with that case.”
Anthony looked down at it.
“This?”
“Maria’s final insurance policy.”
Dominic took one step forward.
Anthony backed toward the exit.
“You know what I learned from our fathers?”
“They thought power meant keeping secrets.”
He looked around the archive.
“They were wrong.”
“Power is deciding when secrets become public.”
He reached for the corridor switch.
Every light died.
Marco shouted.
Footsteps ran.
A door slammed.
When emergency lights came on, Anthony was gone.
But he had dropped the metal case.
Dominic opened it.
Inside were two passports.
One for Maria Sofia Caruso.
One for Elena Caruso.
Both issued under different names.
And a photograph dated four months earlier.
Maria.
Older.
Gray hair.
Alive.
Standing in front of a greenhouse.
Not the abandoned factory.
The greenhouse at Dominic’s mansion.
I stared.
“That photograph was taken at your house.”
Dominic’s face went pale.
He turned toward Marco.
“When was the greenhouse reopened?”
Marco answered.
“Four months ago.”
“By whose order?”
Marco checked his phone.
May you like
Then looked up.
“Rosa’s.”
