Chapter 17 - THE FAMILY MEETING

I never learned how Mom discovered the letter.

Rachel thought Aunt Linda overheard Luke talking.

Luke believed Mom had been checking his old storage account.

It didn't matter.

She knew.

And she was furious.

For the first time, Rachel refused to carry messages between us.

"If she wants to communicate, she can use attorneys."

I was proud of her.

Two weeks after Emma came home, several relatives asked for a family meeting.

I said no at first.

Anna surprised me.

"Maybe we should."

"Why?"

"Because I'm tired of whispering about her."

The meeting took place at Rachel's house.

Mom was not invited.

David advised us not to attend if she would be present.

Luke came.

Aunt Linda came.

Two cousins came.

My mother's older brother, Uncle Robert, drove three hours.

We brought copies of Dad's letter.

Not the original.

I had learned.

Robert read it twice.

Then he removed his glasses.

"I knew Evelyn could be difficult."

Anna's expression tightened.

I spoke before she could.

"Stop saying difficult."

Everyone looked at me.

"She assaulted my wife."

"She manipulated Luke's engagement."

"She violated boundaries at the hospital."

"She has been contacting lawyers to force herself into our child's life."

"Difficult isn't the word."

Uncle Robert nodded slowly.

"You're right."

Linda folded her arms.

"Your father isn't here to explain himself."

Luke laughed bitterly.

"That's convenient."

Linda glared.

"People say things after death that cannot be challenged."

Rachel stared at her.

"Are you saying Dad forged his own letter?"

Linda looked away.

I placed copies of the security stills on the table.

"How many explanations do you need?"

Nobody answered.

Anna finally spoke.

She didn't raise her voice.

"I never asked Michael to stop loving his mother."

Linda scoffed.

Anna continued.

"I asked to be safe inside my home."

The room went still.

"I spent months trying not to cause a family conflict."

"I smiled at dinners."

"I apologized when I hadn't done anything."

"I stopped wearing clothes she criticized."

"I stopped calling friends because she listened to my conversations."

I turned sharply.

"What?"

Anna looked at me.

"I didn't tell you that part."

My anger returned.

She continued.

"I stopped eating downstairs."

"I avoided the nursery."

"I slept badly because I never knew when she would wake me."

She looked around the room.

"And many of you saw me becoming quieter."

No one spoke.

"Nobody asked why."

Rachel started crying.

Anna's voice remained calm.

"So please understand something."

"I'm not trying to take Michael away from his family."

She looked down at Emma sleeping in her carrier.

"I'm trying to make sure my daughter never grows up thinking this is what family love looks like."

Uncle Robert stood.

He walked toward Anna.

For a second, I became tense.

Then he stopped several feet away.

"I am sorry."

Anna nodded.

He turned toward me.

"Your mother needs help."

"She does."

"But she has to choose it."

Robert agreed.

The meeting ended differently than Mom expected.

Nobody demanded reconciliation.

Nobody told me to forgive immediately.

Even Linda left quietly.

Rachel hugged Anna before she went.

Then, just after sunset, my phone buzzed.

It was our home security system.

MOTION DETECTED.

BACK BASEMENT DOOR.

I opened the camera.

My mother was standing outside our house.
