Chapter 14 - WHAT THEIR FATHER KNEW
Ethan unfolded an old architectural blueprint across Daniel’s desk.
The abandoned Reed laboratory had been built during the Cold War.
Beneath the main research level was an emergency evacuation tunnel leading to a wooded maintenance road half a mile away.
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“Why did Dad show you this?”
“He was afraid.”
“Of Owen?”
“I didn’t know then.”
Ethan’s voice cracked.
“Dad told me if anything happened to him, I should never let Owen control the company.”
Daniel stared.
“And you spent six years doing exactly that.”
Ethan looked ashamed.
“I thought Dad was paranoid.”
Daniel almost smiled at the bitter irony.
So had he.
Natalie pointed at the blueprint.
“If Owen is holding Lily in the main building, this tunnel gets us beneath him.”
Grant nodded.
“We can send a tactical team through here.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Owen said he’ll be watching.”
Grant looked at him.
“He expects you to obey because you’re afraid.”
“I am afraid.”
Daniel looked toward Lily’s empty bedroom.
“But I’m not stupid anymore.”
Vanessa stepped closer to the blueprint.
“There’s another issue.”
She pointed at the old chemical storage wing.
“Owen used this place before.”
Daniel looked at her.
“When?”
“After Elena died.”
Vanessa’s admission silenced the room.
“He brought me there.”
“Why?”
“He wanted every copy of Elena’s evidence.”
“He thought I had one.”
“What happened?”
“He put a gun on the table.”
Vanessa’s voice became unsteady.
“He told me I could either become useful or become a problem.”
Daniel finally understood how she had remained trapped in Owen’s orbit.
It did not erase what Vanessa had done.
But it explained some of it.
“What did you choose?”
“To be useful.”
Vanessa looked toward the floor.
“And every choice after that became harder to undo.”
Daniel picked up Elena’s ledger.
“No more choices.”
“Tonight this ends.”
Grant divided the plan.
Daniel and Natalie would approach through the main entrance with copied evidence.
The originals would remain with police.
Adrian and a tactical team would use the underground tunnel.
Ethan would guide them.
Vanessa would stay at the mansion under guard.
Vanessa immediately objected.
“You need me.”
“No.”
“Owen believes I’m still loyal to him.”
Daniel looked at her.
“He saw you locked inside my house.”
“He knows you’ve been exposed.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“He doesn’t know I gave you the second copy.”
She held up the burner phone.
“He sent me a message.”
Daniel grabbed it.
One unread text.
FIX THIS AND YOU STILL GET PAID.
Daniel stared at Vanessa.
“What does he expect you to do?”
Vanessa looked at him.
“Bring Lily’s passport.”
“And kill the transfer freeze.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Can you?”
“No.”
“But Owen thinks I can.”
Natalie understood first.
“We can make him think the money cleared.”
Grant nodded slowly.
“That could buy us time.”
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“If Lily gets hurt—”
Vanessa met his eyes.
“I know.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“No.”
“You don’t.”
“If Lily gets hurt, there will be nowhere on this planet far enough for you to hide.”
Vanessa did not look away.
“For once, Daniel, I’m not trying to hide.”
They left fifteen minutes later.
As Daniel reached the car, Margaret ran outside.
“Mr. Reed.”
She handed him Lily’s small stuffed rabbit.
“She sleeps with this when she’s scared.”
Daniel took it.
Something inside the rabbit made a faint electronic chirp.
Adrian froze.
He pulled open the stitched seam.
Inside was a tiny tracking device.
Daniel stared at Margaret.
She shook her head.
“I didn’t put that there.”
Natalie did.
“Lily’s location appeared on Adrian’s tablet.”
The dot was moving.
