Chapter 8 - Project Crown

Project Crown turned out to be far more ambitious than a forged house transfer.

Mason’s team spent the next twelve hours tracing shell companies, draft agreements, and internal Vale correspondence.

The plan was never finalized.

But enough pieces existed to show what Adrian and Vanessa had been trying to build.

Vale Industries was preparing to launch a private investment division.

The new subsidiary would acquire distressed companies, commercial property, and family-owned businesses.

Adrian had told the board it would become the next engine of growth.

Vanessa had another purpose.

Project Crown was designed to attract assets from wealthy families through tax-efficient structures.

One of the first families Adrian intended to approach was mine.

Except he still did not know exactly who my family was.

He believed I was connected to a collection of obscure European trusts left by my mother.

Vanessa believed those trusts were worth hundreds of millions.

She was wrong.

They were worth considerably more.

“You never told him anything?”

Dad asked.

“I told him my mother left me enough to be comfortable.”

Mason almost smiled.

“That was technically true.”

I gave him a look.

He stopped smiling.

The plan depended on convincing me to transfer some of my family assets into vehicles administered by Vale’s new division.

Once the assets entered the structure, Adrian would control management decisions.

Legally, he would not own them.

Practically, he could borrow against them, charge fees, and use them to strengthen Vale’s balance sheet.

It was brilliant.

It was also never going to happen.

“Why would he think I would agree?”

I asked.

Caleb answered quietly.

“Because Vanessa convinced him you wanted to save the marriage.”

The sentence hurt more than I expected.

They had understood one thing correctly.

For a long time, I would have done almost anything to save us.

Adrian knew that.

He had mistaken love for permanent surrender.

At the emergency board meeting that afternoon, I finally saw him again.

The meeting was held by video because my attorney did not want me in the same building with him.

Adrian appeared on the screen from Vale Tower.

He wore a dark suit.

His hair was perfect.

His voice was controlled.

For a moment, he looked exactly like the man investors trusted.

“The events of last night are being deliberately exaggerated.”

He stared into the camera.

“My wife is under extreme emotional pressure.”

I almost admired the audacity.

Then he continued.

“Her father has apparently been secretly financing aspects of this company for years without my knowledge.”

Several directors looked uncomfortable.

Adrian leaned forward.

“This is not a financial dispute.”

“This is a hostile takeover disguised as a family crisis.”

My father muted his microphone.

“He is good.”

“I know.”

That was part of why I had loved him.

Adrian continued for nearly ten minutes.

He spoke about lender manipulation.

Hidden ownership.

Conflicts of interest.

Coercive financing.

He carefully avoided discussing the riding crop.

He carefully avoided Vanessa.

He carefully avoided my injuries.

Then the lead independent director spoke.

“Adrian, we received the security preservation notice.”

Silence.

“We also received confirmation that Mrs. Vale underwent medical treatment last night.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“That has nothing to do with corporate governance.”

“It does if the CEO attempted to force a shareholder to transfer assets.”

Adrian looked at the screen.

“Who said that?”

I unmuted myself.

“I did.”

His eyes found mine.

For the first time, his polished expression cracked.

“Mara.”

I watched him carefully.

“You wanted me quiet for three years.”

I placed the forged assignment agreement in front of the camera.

“That arrangement is over.”

Vanessa entered the conference room behind him.

She whispered something in his ear.

Adrian’s face changed.

Then he abruptly requested a recess.

The screen went dark.

Mason immediately checked his phone.

“What?”

I asked.

“Something just happened at Vale Tower.”

My father stood.

“Security?”

Mason nodded.

“Adrian and Vanessa are trying to enter the executive records room.”

“Why?”

May you like

Mason looked at me.

“Because Project Crown may not have been the only thing they were hiding.”
